“I wish the film industry would represent autism accurately-”

Ok, try again. You want the film industry to represent YOU accurately. Just because you’re not represented doesn’t mean that there aren’t autistics who feel very much represented because that’s their lived reality and that’s how they are and how people perceive them.

The film industry often represents autism accurately, it simply doesn’t represent your autism, so if you want your autism to be represented, please say that instead of throwing those under the bus who feel represented.

There are autistics who love Sheldon Cooper because they absolutely relate to him and feel seen (at least the first couple of seasons, not sure about the rest). There are autistics who love Shaun Murphy because they are just like him and feel seen -

I only watched season 1, but I especially like that his executive dysfunction is shown in that he needs alarms for brushing his teeth and knowing when to stop, not knowing how to express his point, having a strange facial expression just like me, having an “odd” voice which is absolutely accurate for many many autistics, and bonus points for him being able to live with his brother as a child without completely freaking out - if that would have happened, it would be an “autism stereotype” that applies to me, but they made him more independent. Bonus points for making him more independent and therefore breaking the “helpless savant” stereotype! Also he can cope with sudden touch even though it’s uncomfortable to him (episode 1).

I don’t know how he’s shown now, but what I saw in season 1 was really well researched and accurate representation for a special group of autistics - not for every autistic, that will never be possible. It simply will never be possible to represent every group of autistics at once. But this group there was well represented.

If I’d look at autistic characters and say “This is bad representation” whenever it doesn’t represent ME specifically, I’d say that to every character there is. Because my kind of autism simply isn’t represented, not even here on Tumblr.

Instead I check if there are nuances that are well researched and definitely an autism thing. And I find these nuances everywhere and am really happy that people did so much research about that.

Prev “the problem was never inaccuracy[…]” - YES! Whenever people have a problem with autistic or autistic-coded characters, it’s because of plot things, of “friends” making fun of the character, of the autism being used as an excuse for bigotry (because the writers pulled that trope), etc., but NOT because the autism actually is represented inaccurately!

But that’s the plot, that’s not “inaccurate autism representation” -

Whenever autistics criticise that, they don’t say “Hey, you pulled this shitty trope again, stop that!”. But this is exactly what they should say! The answer to writers making characters do shitty things is pointing that out - NOT acting like they didn’t research autism well enough.

Because whenever they do that, everyone who relates to that character because of their traits hears “Hey, your existence isn’t accurate representation!”

gotham is exactly the right amounts of wet and socioeconomically unstable to have spawned an INSANE grunge scene you just know their local shit is like the sonic equivalent of getting hit over the head with a car battery

bruce wayne has his finger on the pulse of gotham’s underground music scene he’s like “listen to this” and he puts on a cassette he bought for $10 from a guy under a bridge and its like 90 minutes of some guy crooning in a flooded warehouse with a guitar amp they found in the river and there’s active gunfire in the background of half the songs

gotham grunge band “arkham fire” debut album “DYING ALL THE TIME” becomes the world’s first snuff record because their guitarist is killed by the joker in the middle of the fifth track and it is unequivocally considered their best song

Y'all remember that post I made about endemic species and Central Kentucky, how you’d expect there to be species unique to the area but there aren’t, and speculating that early colonization of the Americas wiped them out before they could be described?

And then I speculated that those undiscovered species could be hanging on somewhere?

WELL GUESS WHAT! THEY FOUND ONE

Trifolium kentuckiense is a species of clover found nowhere in the world but in Central Kentucky and it was totally overlooked until recently

THIS MEANS THERE COULD BE MORE
